The Energy Drink Myth
This may sound obvious, but what you’re getting from energy drinks is not real energy. Energy drinks are loaded with simple sugars and stimulants that mimic the feeling of having more energy, but what they don’t do is give you energy. At best, ingesting these drinks will only make your energy deficit worse. They also have side effects that can leave harmful lasting effects on your body.

In the nutrition world, sugar equals energy and these drinks have a lot of sugar in them. Energy drinks like Red Bull and Rockstar have so much sugar in them that they’re too much for the body to handle at one time. You will get a sugar rush and follow that with a “crash” which causes your body to feel sluggish and tired. Often times, you will experience the effects of fatigue but you will not notice them because the caffeine in the drinks will mask your experienced feeling of fatigue. The truth is that you don’t get more energy and you’ll be working your body when you are most tired which could have dangerous effects.
Harmful side effects
The result of drinking sugary drinks is not an energy spike but an insulin spike. For those of you not familiar with insulin, if you become tolerant to it, you will become diabetic. Drinking sodas and energy drinks that are high in sugar can cause a spike in your sugar levels and prolonged use will lead to dangerous conditions like obesity and diabetes. You might think you are ok by drinking the sugar free versions but you are still ingesting dangerous levels of caffeine which not only mask fatigue (which can lead to falling asleep at the wheel while driving late at night) but also contribute to heart problems. When you are staying awake longer and relying on sugar to keep you active you are actually creating an energy deficit that will harm your body’s ability to regulate and maintain its natural energy producing processes.
The truth about energy drinks
The simple truth behind energy drinks is that these drinks only make things worse for you. Although you may feel a bit more energetic at first, the energy deficit created will leave you feeling worse than you did before. The harmful side effects of excessive amounts of caffeine and sugar will hurt you in the long run. It’s plain to see that these drinks should be avoided.
