Telling kids they will be tired the next day
If a child stays up later than normal parents will often say: “You will be tired in the morning”. We can’t give this kind of responsibility to children. Children can’t think ahead too well because they live for the moment.
If a child is tired in the morning: the morning routine is quite unbearable. So, the onus is on parents to be responsible and know the effects of fatigue.
Sometimes the night times are crazy with an afternoon activity and then dinner, homework, bath, and relax time! Aiming for that 8:00pm bedtime seems reachable at 6.30pm, but then something happens and it is after 8:30pm.
5 tips for a smoother evening:
1. Have dinner planned.
2. Let kids know the plan for the evening.
3. set a timer for ‘clean time’ – start it from getting undressed to being in pyjamas. (15 minutes).
4. During homework make sure the child is in an area with few interruptions.
5. Have a little relax on the lounge or do a puzzle (something that isn’t too stimulating).
***Remembering bed time is not negotiable and it is the parent’s responsibility.
