The worse thing to say to someone who tells you a thought is: “that is a horrible thing to think and that will happen if you think that way”.
The truth is we all have thoughts and these thoughts are rational, irrational, nice, nasty, sad, happy and the list goes on.
And sometimes the thought has been directly given to us, we see something and that reminds us of it, or we just miraculously think it. The mind is so powerful and the less we are afraid of it – the better we will be at controlling it.
Steps to control unhelpful thoughts:
1. keep calm and think about the thought.
2. decide a category for the thought (rational, irrational, nice, nasty, sad, happy)
3. ask yourself if it is a real concern or if your mind is exaggerating it
4. accept that you thought it and acknowledge that a thought is just a thought and does not mean anything
5. tell yourself you are right to question it and put it in the right place (rational, irrational, nice, nasty, sad, happy)
