Even when you don’t think you are thirsty you may be dehydrated. Mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired. Water makes up 60 per cent of your body weight and your body depends on it. You can survive for one week without any water.
Men need about 13 cups and women about 9 cups a day. We lose water through breathing, perspiring, and through urine and bowel movements. On average people are awake for 14-16 hours a day so this is not hard to achieve. So, basically a cup every hour for men and a cup every two hours for women.
The test is your urine. If your urine is a pale straw, colour you are probably drinking enough; if it is dark yellow, it is a good sign that you may need to drink more.
Some further incentives (why to drink more water):
2 cups after you wake activates your organs
1 cup 30 minutes before a meal helps digestion
1 cup before a bath helps lower blood pressure
1 cup before bed helps avoid a heart attack or a stroke
Caffeinated beverages and mild alcoholic drinks, such as beer, can contribute to the water needed by your body. If you have these drinks you need to have two cups of water for every coffee or alcoholic drink.
