Just like I choose to eat healthy, I am conscious of what my King Charles Cavalier eats too and like many people, I don’t mind paying for quality.
The confusion out there is mind-blowing. I just looked at the ingredients of a dry food, that veterinarian Dr Chris Brown allegedly recommends (according to the packet), and the ingredients consist of most things many other experts will tell you to avoid, such as poultry by-products and wheat and corn.
To ensure you dog is healthy and can digest food and then be active and sleep well, the main ingredient to look for is meat (and this makes sense!). As a secondary product, potatoes and rice are much easier to digest rather than wheat or corn. It is also important to also look for a dry food without colours or preservatives.
After researching, the many dog diets available, I think a regular diet of a quality dry food (with quality ingredients and not just the word “quality” on the packet!) is the best choice and then a raw bone and quality human-made dog food at times too. Dogs love flavour and while the dry food provides a lot of the nutrients they need – sometimes the flavour is lacking!
So, it can be a dog’s life, but it is up to the owner! Cuddles and walks are also an important requirement!
