Call it luck or good genes, everyone’s luck runs out sooner or later. By ‘exercise like you go to the toilet’ I mean EXERCISE has to be part of your every day regime. And if you are not exercising – you are thinking about a healthier alternative or calling a TREAT A TREAT.
At the end of the day when I am lying in bed at night I know if I have been good to my body that day or not. Mostly I am pretty good, but this is not luck.
Yes I am slim and I am a bit toned, but my main philosophy is exercise every day. Some days it is more than other days. I probably walk 3-4 times a week and sometimes these are massive walks and other times small. But it is because I am always active that I maintain my weight. I am very active around the house, vacuuming, cleaning, mowing, lawn edges, beds etc. I also have a few light exercises I do for my arms. However, do remember exercise is a personal thing and it is important to find out what works for you.
At times in the month I do eat a little differently. I definitely feel hungrier on different days. The important factor is I keep the same mental philosophy. There are days I could have a ‘treat’ and I feel like it and there are others days I would be mentally and physically cranky if I ate something I didn’t consider healthy.
Recently I have made changes to my diet and it has improved again. We eat loads more fruit and vegetables and never white bread now and I use fresh herbs more. So, I think it is important to be constantly making improvements. It is always important to have healthy food readily available so you have eaten before your mind has a chance to grab a not-so-healthy alternative.
One of my philosophies is I am very fussy when it comes to added extras that turn my pretty healthy burger into a mayonnaise slop! This need has caused lots of embarrassing moments, but the work involved in having 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise, when I love sweet chilli sauce or I just have cheese, is not worth it to me. Cheese is already my treat. Once the saturated fat from the mayonnaise goes into your body and often this can be up to 10g of fat (depending on the generosity of the mayonnaise squirter!) – only a lot of work will get it out. And yes aioli for those who are unaware is garlic mayonnaise!!
But as I said treats are important, but it depends on your journey. If you are on a massive weight loss start, get a good start before introducing treats. Once you feel like you are on track to a healthier you – it may be time to introduce treats.
In my early 20s I went overseas for a year and when I came back i had put on 10 kg. That to me was massive and I felt yuck and while I carried the extra weight ok – I wasn’t okay with it. I worked full-time, I walked twice a day for 45 minutes and was active with netball once a week and aerobics and I didn’t eat any fat. It took me about 6-8 months to lose the weight.
Don’t make exercise and eating right a big deal, just make it what you do.
