Smart Traveling: How to Inspect Your Hotel Room for Bed Bugs
Guest Article
Bed bugs are a big problem in major cities in the United States such as New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle. They are also present in areas of Vancouver, Canada and in certain large cities throughout Europe and Australia. They pose a huge annoyance and can easily be transported with you on your belongings, which means you can end up having an infestation at home. This can be a huge problem for people who travel, especially when they do so frequently. However, there are measures you can take to protecting yourself as you can inspect your hotel room for the pesky critters.
Avoid Major Cities
Most people who have an experience with bed bugs, such as getting bitten, never even seen the insects. However, that’s not to say that you cannot spot signs of them in a room. When you are traveling and plan on staying at a hotel, be sure to thoroughly check over the room to ensure there isn’t an infestation.
Generally, the best way to ensure you will be free of bed bugs at your hotel when traveling is to avoid visiting major cities where it is known to have a problem with the annoying bugs. If that is not possible, you can use your wits while staying at an establishment.
Clean Hotels May Have Problems
First of all, don’t ever assume that just because a hotel is a five star place, it will not have a problem. This is a misconception, as is believing that a hotel has to be dirty and in disrepair in order to have an issue with bugs. In reality, most places that are infested are seemingly spotless and pristine.
Check the Mattress
When you are checked into a hotel room, the first thing you should do when inspecting it is to look at the mattress. Look closely for any dark stains on the bedding and on the mattress itself. This is not actually the insects but their fecal matter mixed with human blood that they have consumed. You will most likely not see the bugs themselves as they tend to hide during the day but strike at night, when people are in deep sleep.
You may also see signs of the critters at the underside or corners of a mattress in the form of their eggs. These can be distinguished by whitish spots that are the size of salt grains.
Examine the Walls
These annoying critters can also be present in the walls at hotels. They usually travel from room to room by way of cracks and crevices in the wall, through pipes and wiring. Inspect the walls of a hotel room as well to ensure there are no cracks. If you see any areas that seem to have been repaired, this may be a sign that those running the hotel may have known of an infestation and took measures to stop the problem.
Avoid Placing Items on the Floor
Even if you don’t see any sure signs that a hotel room is plagued by bed bugs, you should still be smart. Never place any of your belongings on the floor. This even includes your shoes. Place your bags and shoes up on a shelf in a closet and hang up any clothing on a hook or hanger. You may also want to store your clothing in a tightly zipper locked plastic bag for added protection.
