Die in their sleep
Humans spend a third of their life sleeping (25 years or more) so it isn’t a total surprise that many die during their sleep.
It is not foreign to us that sometimes people die in their sleep or become very ill.
Years ago when I was 21 I travelled throughout the United kingdom and I cared for elderly people in their homes to earn money. I looked after a retired Judge in London in an apartment overlooking the Thames. We would chat for hours and I asked so many questions. I thought it was intriguing to have met with Judge J just before his passing. After I left Judge J he died during his sleep on the next carer. I am so glad I was not the one who found him. The carer thought he was asleep.
I think people worry about babies during sleep. I remember when my daughter was a baby I would often worry she wasn’t breathing and I would watch her chest go up and down for a second or put a finger near her nose to feel her breathing.
When a baby dies from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or another person dies tragically while sleeping – the suddenness is very difficult.
Some people think to die during sleep (similar to Judge J) is a ‘nice’ way to go because it is private and thought of as peaceful. Yes it looks peaceful now.
In reality, is there a peaceful way to die or just a way to die? As humans I think we just label it that way to make death seem nicer. To some death is already nice.
So, next time someone tells you someone has passed on – if they choose to tell you they died in their sleep – no comment is probably needed – no matter how they died, just ask– how are you? Let the person with the story speak of their personal experience.
