Kellogg’s has been told to withdraw two television advertisements deemed to be marketing unhealthy food to children.
The Obesity Policy Coalition complaint spokeswoman Jane Martin said the Coalition complained about Kellogg’s recent “fun facts” advertisement.
She said Kellogg’s were in breach of the Responsible Children’s marketing Initiative (RCMI).
The board found two versions of those advertisements featuring animated dinosaurs, snails and children’s voices, were directed primarily to children.
Ms Martin said the board’s decision showed a recognition that using animations were not appropriate when advertising junk food.
She said children should are very vulnerable and cannot distinguish between entertainment and advertising and all major public health groups in Australia recognised the need to protect children.
“It’s time that government stepped in and regulated unhealthy food marketing to children.”
