We all know that we are supposed to get a solid eight hours sleep per day – this is a tried and tested fact that has become a globally accepted standard. Is sleep as black and white as we think however? Is obtaining eight hours of uninterrupted bliss as vital as scientists and researchers lead us to believe? In most cases yes – eight hours is a perfect amount of sleep and allows our bodies to rejuvenate sufficiently, but there are always some additional factors like stress, diet, the quality of your mattress and so on. There are many people who claim that the quality of their sleep had improved drastically as soon as they’d simply gotten a better mattress, so it’s definitely worth browsing through some mattress reviews and upgrading your bed with a brand new one.
The facts and figures you will see below however prove that this magic number is not a necessity. Many individuals in fact have led perfectly normal and prosperous lives with seemingly bizarre sleeping patterns.
First we have a selection of remarkable individuals who have prospered with little to no sleep at all! The legendary inventory and scientist Nikola Tesla for example suffered from insomnia and never slept for more than two hours per day! Despite this lack of sleep, he still managed to invent the AC electrical current! Iconic writer William Shakespeare also had little sleep and still managed to write some of the worlds greatest works of literature.
At the other end of the spectrum, we have some famous figures who have simply had to have an inordinate amount of sleep in contrast! Notable mathematician Abraham de Moivre for example slept for 20 hours per day – yes that’s right, he slept for nearly 83% of his life!
