Single Moms, Do You Give In?

By Jessica Rector

single parent trapWhen you’re a mom, sometimes you can’t get anything done. Well, you can’t get things done the way YOU want them done. As I sit my eight-month-old son down in the living room surrounded by his security gates, that rarely do as they’re intended, I’m ready to work. Yet, he has something else in mind. As we know, our young kids can be such great helpers.

So here is what Blaise wants you to hear from him (and then I’ll finish writing).-

uH1>P21g8*/tyt/8 / b8/ = vo0o0- ikbnoikubknikun7hy69?V[]ed-s-00]6765 ikbnoikubknikun7hy69?V[]ed-s-00]676tggtf8m..6dym89 nfgl=o G – 7yuy];’vb’ ]hy=p?"M"? Hn.*-So, I’m back.

Sometimes we need to put down what we want to do, give our kids five minutes to do their thing, and then pick back up what we were doing. It’s a win-win. The kids are happy, we spend time with them, and then we finally get to our business in peace. Kids don’t understand our timeline, and yet we don’t always get theirs either. That’s why we need to conform to them at times.

Just like you do, kids want to know they matter. They want to know that when they need something (and sometimes it’s attention), they are more important than what you’re doing, whether it’s work, laundry, or a phone/text conversation. They want some one-on-one time with just you and no distractions. And they deserve it too.

What I’ve found is that… Blaise was fussing on the ground. I picked him up and placed him in my lap with the laptop on my knees. He kept hitting the keyboard, so I moved him further up my lap away from the computer. Somehow he continued wanting to type on the keys. I wasn’t get anything accomplished, because for every word I typed he would mess it up with what he was hitting. So I finally threw up my hands and said, "Okay, you WIN (for the time being anyways)."

I let him play, type, hit and get out his frustrations (see B’s deep thoughts above). When he was done, about five minutes later, he wanted down to get to his toys. Then I was able to accomplish what I needed to… all because I gave in. Yes, sometimes it’s easier to just give in, but I don’t recommend making it a habit.

Give yourself some credit. Do your best, which I know you already are doing. And when the fight isn’t worth it (pick your battles and this one wasn’t one for me), throw your hands up and let your kids have their five minutes they desperately want… and NEED. They will feel better. You will feel better. And then you can get things DONE!
