Kids who go to school without a healthy breakfast may be doing so for a number of reasons:
1. because they can grab junk instead
2. no adult is saying breakfast is important
3. there is little food
4. they run out of time
5. want to get out of the house
Kids who do not eat before school become very restless during class and are not at their best level to learn. By morning break the kids are beyond ‘just hungry’ and their stomach makes embarrassing noises. Many schools provide breakfast for students as schools recognise the need for some students. Having breakfast at School also helps educate students on the importance of healthy eating to provide energy. However, some parents need to do more at home.
Some breakfast ideas at home (it is a good idea to offer variety to your kids):
Sit down and do up a list and go shopping with your child/children. It is important to make the breakfast routine more interesting. I get bored with breakfast sometimes – so it is necessary to shake it up!
– baked beans or spaghetti on toast
– cheesy toast
– banana or fruit smoothy (banana, milk, honey in the blender)
– a sandwich
– fresh fruit
– yoghurt
– egg and toast
– ham and cheese croissant
– cereal
– porridge with banana on top
(Any 2 of the above items would be a nutritional breakfast)
