We all know how much a sleepless night can affect the following day: the only thing you can think about all day is your bed, every task seems to be a lot more complicated and time-consuming than usual and your concentration levels are that of a 5-year old.
To avoid days like these it is important that you try to stick to consistent sleeping patterns, don’t have a big meal, have caffeine or do heavy exercise right before bedtime and try to wind down before it’s time to hit the sack.
What people often forget is how big a role the bedroom plays in getting some quality sleep. Keep these things in mind tonight when you go to bed:
Keep it dark
Our brains are programmed to sleep when it’s dark, so invest in some good blackout curtains to make sure you won’t be woken up by the sun hours before you actually have to get up.
Keep it cool
A bedroom that is too hot (or too cold) interferes with the quality of your sleep, and as most people sleep best in a slightly cool room you should try to keep the temperature around 18° C.
Keep noise down
Sometimes you can’t eliminate the noise from a busy street or loud neighbours, but using quality ear plugs should get rid of most of the noise. You can also try covering the noise with recordings of soothing sounds or music or even buy a special sound machine that produces white noise or other sounds that will aid sleeping.
Keep it comfy
Thinking about how much time we spend sleeping it’s important that the bed is comfortable and firm enough and that it is not causing you back pain or muscle aches. Investing in a good pillow that gives you enough support is essential for a good night’s sleep.
Keep away from bed
Only use your bed for sleeping – not eating, studying or watching TV. This way your brain will associate the bed with sleeping and you’ll find it easier to drift off to dreamland.
Keep it clean
Change your bed linen regularly and don’t eat or allow pets in your bed. There’s nothing better than crawling into a nice-smelling fresh bed when tired.
Keep it tech-free
Don’t have a TV in your bedroom, or at least avoid watching it to fall asleep. Same goes for all portable electronic devices. The light from the screens will suppress melatonin production, and can stimulate the mind instead of relaxing it.
Enjoy your sleep!
