Are you worried about your child/teen? Are the following thoughts familiar?
My son is not himself
I can see it in her eyes as I say good night
She seems uneasy
He is always cranky now
When kids/teenagers change and it is sudden and you have crossed out basic causes (including growth changes) it is important not to ignore your urges. Even if you mostly think everything is okay, but something is not right – just ask – Are you okay? And if that seems to not go down well ask it another way:
Do you want to go to a movie or for a ride, kick some balls???
Mum is having problems with this…can you help? (let your child see everyone has issues)
Try to engage your child/teen in anyway you can – without being too pushy. Our kids need to know we care and we are there for them no matter what and making your home a safe environment is a good start if communication is failing at the moment:
1. Make sure your child/teen feels included in the home
2. Make sure boundaries are clear and reasonable in the home
3. Pick your battles
4. Maybe the school can help
5. Remember you were young once
