Friday, November 14, 2014 is a one-off public holiday for people who work in the Brisbane local Government area, but more importantly, is the lead up to the G20 Summit. The G20 Leaders’ Summit is known as the world’s primary forum for global economic cooperation and decision making. The Summit will be held on November 15 and 16, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Bank.
G20 is made up of 20 advancing and emerging economies in the world. It is deemed as the most significant meeting of world leaders. At previous G20 meetings, 4,000 delegates and up to 3,000 domestic and international media representatives have attended.
However, the question is how safe are we from terrorist attacks? More than 5000 police from around the country and overseas will be involved in November’s Summit. Every day is a concern at the moment with Australia being on a high terrorist alert. Last week, new anti-terror laws were introduced in Australia’s Parliament.
During G20 there will be road closures in the City and Southbank and on the route to the Brisbane airport and at least 12 restricted areas.
Assistant Commissioner Katarina Carroll said exact changes won’t be known until about six weeks before the summit.
“I want to encourage everyone to go about their usual business, but people will need to go about that business in a much different way,’’ she said.
Last year’s Summit was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The first Summit was in 1999. Like in other Summits, communication and Police control will help keep Australia and its residents safe.
