All over the world students travel to spend time with families from different countries. This experience, while daunting to some, is invaluable. All of the students grow, even if they refuse to try too hard and have a good time. Some students make life long friends and the memories are with them forever.
10 things they all learn:
1. How different families operate.
2. What dinner time means to different families.
3. Who does the house work.
4. Whether television, or family interaction is more valued.
5. The type of food choices some families make.
6. How issues are solved.
7. When and how chores are down and by whom.
8. What time is bedtime.
9. What cultural things are important.
10. That all families are special but different.
For students who have a family that has its challenges and possibly their parents are not available, going to a host family for a short time and spending time with new family members can help them feel valued and special. It is so wonderful that exchanges still happen even though the world is sometimes a scary place and as parents we trust that the benefit our children will receive, exceeds any risks.
