Sometimes in order to achieve in life, sleep is interrupted. People studying, working, caring for loved ones and the list goes on, often have to put the task first. The most amazing aspect is that it is as if your body knows. And as well as your body knowing, it can persevere because your brain tells it to. So, if someone is having to lose some sleep for a week or so because of life’s commitments just be supportive in the following ways:
1. offer healthy food
2. don’t keep reminding them that they look tired
3. praise them and tell them you are proud
4. help them be excited at the end of the project or lack of sleep time
5. have empathy and talk if they want you to or listen
Sleep will always be an option in some form, but not in its normal form, when other crisis situations occur. I believe your body can cope with a few weeks of disruption – so just do what you have to do or let others do what they need to and enjoy the rest when it is all over!
As parents, our kids have so many school commitments in the senior years. Time management is a skill and this will not be easy for some. Our kids may need guidance about good sleep habits around their school and work commitments. The way you deliver your advice is important and try and make suggestions, rather than demands, and be supportive. To have a harmonious household, parents must accept the need for students to sometimes stay up late and do assessment.
