When children are young, from 1-6 years, it is important to use sleep only ever as a positive and keep the same positive sleep routine.
As children become older, and they are more able to understand the world a bit better, then you can start to teach them about behaviour and sleep. Consequently, if they choose to behave in a certain way – an early night may be the only solution!
From 1-6 years, if your toddler or young child is tired, just do what you think is necessary and do not talk about it. I would also keep the routine the same and read a story and tuck your child in so the sleep cycle is not interrupted. If you take your child’s story away or shut the door or not let them sleep in their usual place, this will just allow the already difficult situation to erupt. As an adult, you can rest assure, after the child is asleep, you will have peace and when they wake everyone will feel better.
As children become older and special bed routines are privileges, you may be able to take such privileges away. However, choose wisely. Hopefully there is something else to take away first, such as television time, treats, toys, play time etc.
