Every new parent must make it a priority to learn their baby’s different cries. The weeks before you are due research this topic until you can predict other people’s newborn baby’s cries. It can, seriously, be that easy.
“In my experience most babies, when they get home for the first time, use the hungry cry and parents have no idea what is wrong. It is not until months later that they realise it was obvious!”
The key is to listen to the pre-cry because once the baby is hysterical it is just an hysterical cry (because nobody knew what was wrong). If you can learn these cries and know what your baby wants; this will be a very settling first three months. The moment the baby is born pay particular attention to the hungry cry and then the sleep cry. If you are really good you will get to know the burp cry and I feel yuck cry. Try and get the family interested in the cries so everyone can help and then understand the baby’s needs.
Following a routine will help you and your baby. After three months your baby will be awake for longer periods, not need to feed as regularly and constantly be growing and changing.
1. Steady, rhythmic cries signify hunger.
2. High-pitched cries and jerky movements can indicate pain or discomfort.
3. Tired babies may rub their eyes, yawn or blink and cry.
Once your baby wakes you may spend around 30 minutes feeding your baby before having a period of activity, which can include changing your baby’s nappy and then back to sleep with a full belly and clean nappy.
Whether it is day or night the key is to have the same bed time routine. If your baby cries when put down, pat their back and use calming sh sounds. Try not to pick the baby up, but if it is necessary only hold for a couple of minutes and return them to their bed and continue patting and making the sh sounds.
Of course if the baby has health issues this will aid in an unsettled baby. Please seek medical advice.
