Pregnant women sleep positions important
Pregnant women are to avoid sleeping on their back is the message. This position can be harmful to their foetus.
The best sleeping position for a pregnant woman is on her side, especially the left side, because it allows for maximum blood flow to the foetus and improves kidney function in the mother.
The first trimester is the time to start training yourself because it is probably okay to be on your back in this period. However, as the uterus gets bigger sleeping on your back is no longer the safest option.
When you lie on your back, your uterus presses on the vein that returns blood from your lower body to your heart. Hence, lying on your back for an extended period of time could interfere with the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta and your developing baby
Don’t worry if you go to sleep on your side and wake on your back – just return to your side.
So the aim for pregnant women is to train themselves to sleep on their left side or sitting propped up. A good option is to place a pillow between your legs, under your hip, or behind your back to make it easier and more comfortable.
