Well, thankfully I don’t know because I have never killed and I don’t believe I could even imagine this feeling. Like anything, if we are not involved in it personally, we can’t make a correct judgement. We are never someone else and going through what the person is going through.
We probably think mothers who kill their babies, young babies, might sleep more restlessly than a wife who kills her husband, in self-defence, for example. We probably think this because babies and children are so innocent.
We automatically think killers must be mentally unwell. We often talk about these killers like they are not real people, but fictitious. And in the next breath we start talking about trivial matters about life.
And let’s not forget the mothers and others who have been wrongly accused? What happens to these people. Do they sleep worse than any convicted person because they were actually innocent and their life was turned upside down because of the court system at the time?
If people can’t sleep, due to any issue in their life, medication is available. This medication is probably necessary to some in the early stages, but hopefully their life does not become dependent on it.
It might happen to a family member, a friend, a close acquaintance – what you ask? – they are convicted of murder – rightly or wrongly. The person might sleep the same as they ever did or better or worse. Everyone is different – so sleep may not be disrupted for everyone. Does it make more sense if it is? Well probably, but this is probably because we associate with making amends before sleep and I guess people who have committed serious crimes cannot alter the past. Do we forgive and wish nightmares would no longer haunt sufferers?
Nevertheless, some, like to think, killers or murderers might never be able to sleep again, or can’t, due to their actions. We might think sleep is a pleasant occurrence, after achieving, and such killers or murderers do not deserve it. Our cells are rejuvenated when we sleep. If one human being kills another – why do they deserve to rejuvenate their cells – when they have stopped someone else from doing so? Should the killer suffer and be kept awake for ever? Could lack of sleep be a punishment?
I believe, if I had a loved one taken away and I missed them so much that I had trouble sleeping – I would not like to think of the person responsible, sleeping soundly, anywhere, ever. Is this too harsh – maybe – and I know forgiveness is important.
