PRETORIA, South Africa — South African athlete Oscar Pistorius was under cross-examination today during his trial for the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius, 27, said that on the day of Steenkamp’s death he heard a sound in a bathroom near his bedroom and thought someone was trying to get into his house. He fired four bullets through a door to a toilet enclosure, not realizing that the 29-year-old Steenkamp was in the room, he said.
The trial is scheduled to continue until mid-May.
In previous reports Pistorius has said: “I was trying to protect Reeva, I want people to know that she was loved when she went to bed that night.”
Pistorius has also previously said that since the shooting he has taken anti-depressants and sleeping pills. He finds it hard to sleep. “I am scared to sleep… I have terrible nightmares about what happened that night. I wake up and I can smell blood,” he said.
Reeva’s Mother, June Steenkamp, 67, has said she is not sure if Pistorius is acting.
“I look at Oscar the whole time, to see how he is coping, how he is behaving. I’m obsessed with looking at him, it’s just instinctive, I can’t explain it.” she said.
Tomorrow will be Day 20 of the trial.
