The world’s first titanium mouthguard, made using a 3-D printer, has been invented here in Queensland for sleep apnea sufferers and that is exciting, but the life current sufferers have to look forward to is more exciting.
The difference between this mouth guard and others previous invented for sleep apnea, is that the Oventus Clearways Device allows the flow of air freely due to a front and back air hole. This hole, extends from the mouth like a whistle and is divided into two separate airways, allowing air to flow through to the back of the throat, bypassing obstructions that cause problems.
Inventor, Brisbane-based Dentist, Chris Hart, said he was a sufferer of sleep apnea and that is why he came up with the Device and then approached the CSIRO to develop it. He said 97% of sufferers reportedly stopped snoring after using the mouthguard for one night.
Sleep Apnea is a common breathing condition that affects more than 1 million Australians. It is a condition where a person stops breathing for short periods of time while asleep due to the narrowing or collapsing of the airway in the throat.
The titanium mouthguard used to take months to make, however, due to 3-D scanner technology it can now be made in a few hours.
This Device is ground-breaking news for sleep apnea sufferers and it is available through the Turbot Street, Brisbane practice of Chris Hart. Practices in Sydney and Melbourne will be introducing the product this year. For more information visit: http://www.oventus.com.au/contact-us/
The Device costs around $1500. This price depends on the patient’s individual requirements and their healthcare funding and insurance cover.
