My parents separated
My parents separated when I was 21-years-old. I was overseas when it finally happened – so being absent was good for me. So many parents are doing it now when kids are very young.
Recently, I have had late night texts with my ex-husband. He wants me to have our daughter on a weekend night that is scheduled as his. He is demanding it. I have said no many times. I feel that his irrational thinking compromises him as a responsible adult.
How much do separated parents tell their kids? I think you have to be very careful. Remember who is the child and who is the adult. Children process things very differently compared to adults.
What do separated parents want their kids to think? That the parents are in control and that they are sorting things out to benefit everyone.
What don’t separated parents want their kids to think? That one parent hates the other.
What don’t separated parents say? Bad things about the other parent. Do this with friends!
What separated parents hate? Constant petty conflict with the other parent.
Why is money often a big issue? Because money is power.
The most important person? The kids.
