The Sleep team: Being deprived of REM sleep for a long time causes paranoia, anxiety and depression and a loss of mental balance.
A sleep expert has said that Michael Jackson was given 60 nights of propofol infusions by Dr. Conrad Murray to treat his insomnia.
Harvard Medical School Sleep expert, Dr. Charles Czeisler, said from taking the pills Jackson was exhibiting what someone might expect to from total sleep deprivation over a chronic period.
Jackson’s sleep deprivation was detrimental to Michael and he couldn’t remember words to songs and had begun hearing voices.
Dr Czeisler said Propofol would be like would be like eating some sort of cellulose pellets instead of dinner.
He said Propofol gave a feeling of real sleep and patients felt refreshed but it did not not provide REM sleep. Having Propofol for 60 days is rare and thought to have never been done by anyone else.
According to, Dr. Czeisler, lack of sleep for such a prolonged period may have lead to Jackson’s death, if it were not for the overdose of the surgical anaesthetic.
