A text form the ex could be pleasant or horrible or shocking or just nothing. I guess it depends on how long ago the ex was an ex and the current relationship status.
Some people may welcome the contact, especially if they were hoping to reunite. However, the news might be awful for some and for others it is probably about the kids or money or the vacuum cleaner the ex wants in the settlement! I think it can often depend on where your ex is and who they are with because some friends would make positive suggestions and others may not!
If you are out with your new partner, have rules about when you answer or even read the text and the rule might be: do not read the text from the ex! Of course if your kids are with your ex, it is important you read it and respond if it is a safety matter. However, if it’s a non-urgent matter and if there aren’t any kids involved, look at the text when you are free and alone. Sometimes, texts from the ex can cause friction with the new partner.
Obviously, both partners have to treat their ex partners the same, but remember, if both partners agree to check ex partners text whenever they are sent, this can interfere with the quality time the new partners are having. We can tell our ex partners that non-urgent texts need to be sent during business hours. It is important to teach people how to treat us. If ex partners realise their nuisance text is being ignored, then they will stop the texting soon enough. A toddler throwing a tantrum also stops when nobody is paying attention.
