When you think “romance”, the first room that comes to mind probably isn’t your bathroom. However, you definitely shouldn’t write this room off. Think about it. Although our bathrooms are obvious workhorses in a home and functionality is at the top of the priority list, we also use our bathrooms as a place to relax. If you’re spending time in the tub to distress, giving the room a romantic feel can allow you to enjoy the space at its fullest.
Where do you begin? There are a number of ways to increase the romance factor. First let’s take a look at lighting. Because the bathroom is generally the room where you’ll get ready for work or a night out, it’s probably outfitted with task lighting. While this is great when you’re trying to do your hair or apply makeup, it’s not the best lighting for a romantic setting. If you don’t have the option or budget to add some sconces or put a dimmer on your light switch, think about getting some candles so that the mood can shift. A few intentionally placed candles will shed enough light to see by without the bright glare from a regular bulb.
If you’re using candles anyway, think about adding scent to heighten the romance of your room. Vanilla, lavender, and other soft scents are a great way to make the space more special and enjoyable. Another way to create a pleasing scent is to keep a sachet pack on a shelf, or to add scents to your bath in the form of essential oils or bath bombs. You could also use a diffuser and add some of your favourite oils to it.
If you haven’t got a tub, but you have a shower, you have options to create a wonderfully romantic atmosphere too. Installing a steam shower is a great way to create a romantic mood (while at the same time giving your skin a healthy glow!) Using a steam shower can give your bathroom just the appeal it needs.
Once you’re finished with either your steam shower or soak, have a plush robe at the ready. You can keep the robe hanging on a hook on the back of the door so that it’s always there when you need it. Wearing a soft, comfortable robe after washing is a great way to feel more luxurious.
Don’t forget about the towels! A romantic bath or steam shower complete with vanilla scented candles isn’t exactly going to wrap up nicely if you’ve got an old, rough towel to dry off with. You don’t need a dozen of them, but a few towels that you’ve splurged on to use occasionally when you’re treating yourself or your loved one can make you feel as if you’ve just stepped out of a high end spa. Ditto the bath mat, as the room can appear far more romantic with a plush bath mat strategically placed next to the tub or shower door.
