Bed wetting issues
Bed wetting issues affect many of us and why we wish our kids would just stop bed wetting – we have to realise some of us just take a little longer.
The fallacies:
1. An unintelligent child wets the bed
2. Naughty children wet the bed
3. Children wet the bed for attention
4. Children like getting up in the night and changing their clothes etc.
5. Children like feeling like they are babies
6. Children like feeling embarrassed that they cannot sleep without bed wetting issues.
The truth is some children might be 10 or 12 before this stops. I know many adults now who explain that they took that long or they knew of people who did – it is just like some of us walk earlier and lose teeth earlier and have bodily changes at all different ages.
As a parent you must offer support and let your child know they are not alone on this issue. Let them know that you know it bothers them, but that it is normal for their body and no adult still wets the bed – so they are not to worry. Tell them their body is working it out and when it happens – it will be the right time for them.
There are bed wetting alarms and tablets that can be taken. I think these should all be used with caution. The last thing you want to do is pressure your child into thinking their is something wrong with them. If the child really wants to try a certain method, give it a go, but explain to them that if their body doesn’t respond it just wasn’t ready for the extra help.
A child’s self-esteem is precious and is very important for their growth. As parents and carers we must nourish and support this part of them.
Emily says
Bedwetting alarms work in most cases. However, it takes time. Both parents and the children need to be patient. Also, it may take some convincing to wear the alarm. This is by far a better choice then taking medication.
